West Highland White Terrier (Westie) – Breed Overview

Origin:
The Westie hails from Scotland, originally bred for hunting small game like foxes and rodents. With their keen senses and sturdy frame, they quickly earned a reputation as fearless little workers.

Size:

• Height: 10–11 inches
• Weight: 15–20 pounds

Appearance:
Westies are instantly recognizable by their bright white coats, pointy ears, and dark, expressive eyes. Their coat is double-layered — a soft undercoat and a rougher, weather-resistant topcoat.

Temperament:

• Independent yet affectionate
• Bold and confident, often acting like they’re much larger than they are
  They’re known for being curious, and while they can be stubborn, they’re also very loyal and trainable with consistency.

Exercise Needs:
Though small, Westies are energetic and need daily exercise — walks, playtime, and mental stimulation keep them happy. They thrive in both apartments and homes with yards as long as they get their playtime.

Grooming:
Regular brushing is important to keep their white coat clean and free of mats. Occasional professional grooming helps maintain that signature Westie look.

Health:
Generally a healthy breed, but like all dogs, they may be prone to conditions like skin allergies and patellar luxation. Regular vet check-ups and a good diet go a long way.

Yes! Westies tend to be great with children and can get along with other dogs, especially if socialized early. They still have that terrier prey drive, so small pets like hamsters or birds might not be the best companions.
